Vintage shopping can be a complete life changer when it comes to building up a really fabulous wardrobe but let’s be honest, you need to invest the time in sourcing the good stuff. Not all vintage stores are created equal.

So it stands to reason that a clever vintage shopper has a list of items that they will have with them in order to stay “on task”. I keep mine in Notes on my phone.

My current vintage wish list is:

  • Plaid winter pants (I’d love a black watch cheque or a red tartan of some sort too). Ideally men’s style which sit on the waist not hips.

  • Denim / chambray pants (wide legged).

  • eopard print pants

  • Leopard print skirt or dress

  • Silver blazer

  • Tartan or plaid blazer

In the pic above I’m wearing a blazer from my favourite vintage store in Melbourne, Mused. Dean at Mused is like an oracle of vintage fashion. He has wonderful tales of times spent in Claude Montana’s apartment in Paris (the two were good friends) and whenever I visit he has a treasure trove of pieces that need rifling through.

This is a beautiful menswear suit jacket which is perfectly oversized for me. It’s Louis Feraud and it’s a flannel shade of grey in wool which works with pretty much everything.

In the same visit I picked up an old Lanvin mens suit jacket. Again, it’s become a staple that I love to wear and find very easy to work into my outfits. These are good examples of items to add to your vintage shopping list so you’re always on the lookout for them.

The thing is, it’s very easy to cruise into a thrift store and wander the aisles, flicking through the racks and then leave because nothing really caught your eye. If you don’t have a few specifics in mind, you have to really get lucky to unearth something you really will wear and wear again. Having a Vintage Shopping List (VSL) ensures you stay focused on finding the pieces you need and know you’ll wear.
