I’ve recently stumbled into a time of life which is a bit traumatic. But I’m choosing to see the upside, the full half and the silver lining. After all, I have no choice here, that change has come and now I must roll with it.

Heels are no longer my friend. I have a recurring pain in the bone between my big toe and the mainland of my foot. And if I wear heels above about 2 inches, I fall into an acute pain akin with someone stabbing the bottom of my foot. It’s not cute.

So, I am tentatively feeling my way through the off-the-beaten track suburb, which sits way outside the metropolis of high fashion that is “shoes-for-women-who-can’t-wear-heels-but-who-still-want-to-look -fabulous”

I mean look, if i’m honest, a flurry pair of Birkenstocks (with socks in winter) would suffice as a shoe I’d happily wear for the next 40 years, but the cold hard truth there is that they’re not appropriate for all dressing moments. Having said that a friend of mine wore hers to a cocktail event recently very successfully.

In search for a more elevated flat I started in familiar territory. I’ve long been a lover of the loafer and I wore them almost exclusively when I worked in the corporate world. They’re not only snappy and sharp but they allow the opportunity for an excellent sock accessorisation too. Tick. Tick.

My next port of call was the ballet flat. Nothing newsworthy here, we’ve been going down that path since Audrey was prowling around Tiffany & Co, but there is a case I believe now for the modern ballet flat. If you can avoid the super feminine trop of the BF and instead look to baggy jeans or baseball caps with them, I think you can bring them back in a cool way.

Of course Miu Miu’s new mini tube socks deliver that edge so fabulously.

In this outfit i combined my ballet flats with some long jean shorts to balance out the preppy ballerina vibe.

Or a colourful BF is also another nice circuit breaker for an otherwise run of the mill pant as evidenced below so beautiful by the fabulous Sarah Corbett Winder

But if BFs aren’t your thing, what about the clog, or the scuff. So many great options around and as a friend recently reminded me, Winter need not mean the clog goes on pause. We have another SOCK-ORTUNITY!

And then what about the glam flat, there’s still plenty of those to be had. Here’s a few I’ve ogled in recent times.
